We went to eat last week with a couple of friends at Six Plates Winebar in Durham, after lamenting the various restaurants that were closed on Mondays. It was my first time at this particular establishment, although our friends had been there before and loved the food. One of our chief reasons for going was the fact that the four of us could easily order everything on the menu. Six Plates offers about six (give or take a few) different items on the menu, and helpfully suggests pairings of wine by the glass. They had an interesting and unique cocktail menu and a long wine list that lives on a clipboard.
The set-up at Six Plates is bar service which suits me perfectly. We sat at the bar and had great service all night. So when we walked in, we perused the menu, and I said, "Lamby Joes????" and my friends looked at each other and exclaimed, "LAMBY JOES!!!!!!" Needless to say they were happy their favorite thing on the menu had made a return.
...and they were delicious. Each plate comes with two slider-size Lamby Joes artfully stacked and arranged. It was a square ciabatta with lamby joe mince meat spilling out the sides. A dusting of flour from the ciabatta lightly coats your fingers so you can get a good grip. With a few sprigs of arugula garnish and a light, creamy yougurt sauce, the tangy, rosemary favor of the mix had a wonderful backdrop.
We also had angus meat slider burgers. These were even cuter than the Lamby Joes, if that's possible. The bun reminded me of when Dr. Huxtable took Rudi's friends to a fancy restaurant for her birthday and they all just (just!?!?) wanted hambugers. It was a glistening semicircle of delicious carb with a meaty puck of angus delightfully sandwiched inbetween. I gave my burger a sastisfying schmoosh, and took a bite. A little smokey, with crunches of homemade potato chips made this second burger as enjoyable and delectable as the first. There was also an excellent seafood saffron risotto with a perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth bay scallop. We finished the food off with a tasting flight of maple view ice cream and sorbets. All in all a gratifying, exciting, and definitely to be repeated evening.
